keep the wires connected together and that one vacuum line that ran to the metal cylinder, plug it with a bolt or something.
with this over road the apc solenoid will clatter, i heard from many that its normal when the unit is over road.
when mine started clattering i just replaced it and it seems to fix it for at lest a year. i just got annoyed hearing it at stoplights drive-throughs and so on.
with the remaining wire look real close at the fuel cut off, its job is to cut the fuel pump, if im not mistaking it should have three wires and two vacuum lines but dont quote me, on it.
its been sometime since i been under there playing around and my memory isn't up to snuff. its a pain being its so high up there, its the main reason i haven't tweaked it on my car yet.

i know you said you looked everywhere else but im just going to list a few things,
the fpr, pull the vacuum hose off the carb, the one that leads to the fpr, and suck on it seeing if it hold suction, if it dose not replace the fpr, do the same for the ,.... oh what do you call it... tommyknocker.. no,.. oh the hooter valve, i dont see this stalling the car but test it anyway,
next it could be a failing pump, all thats mentioned can produce the symptoms you described, last but not leas check the coil.
the wire could be related to anything, from horn, headlights, who knows.
after you found the problem and hook up the metal cylinder the clicking of the apc will be gone.
