Local shop charged my about $100 or so for stem seals Posted by nicknick [Email] (#731) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nicknick) on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 08:39:39 In Reply to: Re: ummmm...., canada karl, Fri, 18 Apr 2008 05:30:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
valve grind and 'flatten' job. Are you sure the 'front' (rear seal) seal is leaking? not just oil coming from dizzy or HG? wouldn't bother with a chain unless the tensioner shows it is well worn. just pulled the timing chain off one yesterday, and would not consider doing it unless engine was out (people do). intake manifold gasket is real easy when head is off, as is ex gasket. in any case, rear seal (behind flywheel), HG, intake, ex, and alt bushings would take around 10-12 hours all in, with one of those hours spent retiming the chain (there are tips on using small cable ties to locate the marks for a quick reassembly. adda couple of days in between for head work.
tip: if you are planning on doing the ex gasket, then drop the turbo/ex manifold in one piece, don't mess with the manifold to turbo connection-that can cause a huge PITA, and should be avoided at all costs! just remove two bottom bolts for the turbo brace where it meets the trans, unhook oil lines and water lines for turbo (have new gaskets ready-few $), then drop manifold and turbo. remember to pull the bracket that joins the head to pass side engine mount. throw in some new belts while you're there, and that little elbow hose on the front of the head.
also, the inlet gasket replacement means you can leave the manifold sitting on the engine when you pull the head-much easier (lighter/less hook-ups), and should be treated as a way to save time, not add to it.
good luck.
