I had the same problem on my 88tc. I checked both upper and lower U joints,
Still no joy...finally checked the lower bearing in the upper column which
is right above the upper U joint, not easy to get at, but you can see it
from under the knee bolster. This bearing was my problem, it's symptoms were clicking and popping generally as the wheel was centered. If your bearing has not yet decided to drop any needles out, you should be able to quiet the bearing. I did this 8 months ago and it's still working great with no noise.
Here is what I did:
1)Remove the black plastic cover beneath the steering column, it is retained with a twist lock
2)Place a shop towel or rag beneath the steering shaft and on top of
knee bolster panel. This will collect any excess lubricant that may drip.
3)Spray PB Blaster or equivalent at the steering shaft from the access provided by the removed black lower steering column cover.
4)Allow the lubricant to run down the shaft to the lower bearing assembly
5)Turn the steering wheel back and forth several times. Repeat this if necessary, until noise is gone.
6)Follow up with any light oil, once again working the steering wheel back and forth.
7)Remove the shop towel and replace the lower black cover with twist lock
This process worked great for me, of course you could always replace the bearing assembly.
