the HG can fail in several ways.oil-water, water-cylinder, cylinder-cylinder, etc.
water-cylinder is better for the engine, as saabnut says, coolant in oil is very bad for the motor. to check for coolant-cylinder failure, just pull all spark plugs and look for one that looks very different, usually steamcleaned, as this is exactly what happens with that type of failure.
also, with this type of failure, usually one cylinder will run rough upon start-up first run of the day. this is because the pressurized coolant is forced into the cylinder overnight and fowls the plug.
do not allow the car to overheat anymore-a cylinder head is not cheap!
