go for it!
I just finished an engine swap today! I put an 89' engine in my 1991. Works perfectly! I started the project in October. It feels great to have it done and was worth it.
While the engine was out I did: front main seal on the crankshaft, oil pump gasket, alternator bushings, upper A-arm bushings (probably not necessary b/c they were in good shape), belts, and replaced the driver's side motor mount. Just a bunch of stuff that's a PITA with the engine in. I also did the rear main seal, but you won't mess with that if your keeping the trans with the engine.
If you don't have one, I'd recommend a load leveler for your hoist. I got mine for about 50 bucks from the place that carries freight from China's harbor. Also get a thin sheet of ply wood to cover your radiator when you're puling the engine.
I don't know if your a seasoned mechanic, but I'm not. This was the first engine I ever pulled and I thought I'd never remember how to put it all back in. Surprisingly, it all fits back pretty intuitively.
Good luck!
