Do this in place pulling hood release many times so as to try to move it thru its paces and work oil in. Also you can remove the grill (3 Torx screws with hood popped up to safety catch) and get at the two M6 bolts that hold the latch mechanism to the front crossmember. Can remove it from car, detach cable and give it a thorough power wire brushing and de-rusting, oil, and hand work it thru its paces till all is smooth. Or just tip it out where you can see it leaving cable attached and work it there.
At least loosen the attaching bolts and make sure it's centering beneath the cone-headed latch pin coming down from the hood, then retighten.
Anyway if you take it out do the centering on reinstalling; it wants to be dead center below that latch pin. Also a touch of grease on the two rods that the cone pops down thru, and a touch on the cone itself (also de-rust and remove dried grease from that beforehand.)
