134 A Fittings On Compressor: How? What? Huh?

I'm trying to fix my a/c and keep running into some "issues":
1.) How the heck do you guys hook up the 134A a/c manifold gauge couplers to the compressor retrofit nipples? The old R12 nipples on the compressor are too bloody close together and jammed in between hoses, intake, blah, blah. I wasted about 5 ounces of freon trying to get a stuck manifold coupler either on or off the low side of the compressor...grrrrrrrrrr!
2.) Can I just use what I assume are the service ports, the two nipples coming off the manifold hose connectors coming off the compressor, to check high and low pressure?
2A.) How come the service ports are high side on bottom of hose manifold coming off the compressor and low side on top of hose manifold compressor but actual compressor ports are high side (or Discharge) on top and low side (or suction) on the bottom?
3.) I got the manifold hoses that come off the compressor from eeuroparts-- love them-- but they are half inch diameter as opposed to 3/4 like original. Is that cool?
Finally, the Bentley manual says that full R-12 charge should be 2.2 lbs or about 35 ounces. Should I put that much R134A? Seems like way too much.
sorry so long,
Philip
