I have never owned a newer Saab, so I can't comment on the comparison. I have three classic 900 turbo's and one is my daily 60 mile driver with 150k miles, one other is a red 1990 SPG with minor mods (200hp). I currently have no other cars, and have had one classic 900 or another since 1987. I have owned a 2001 BMW 3 series, several trucks, and 2 MBs.
The classic 900 is the most "fun" to drive. It is not the fasted off the line, but is very fast at highway speeds. I have found that the major components are reliable, and I have never been stranded in 21 years by my Saabs (can't say the same about the MBs). I tend to keep my Saabs in top working order, and I have found that minor issues pop-up frequently, not totally unexpected for their age. Like you, I have never changed a clutch or gear-box, but everything else I do myself. I find that the most of the "repairs" I can easily do myself: APC mods, fluid changes, window fixes, dash removal, speedo repair, AC recharge, rattle eliminations, etc.
If you are looking for an inexpensive, fun classic "toy" that still gets compliments at stoplights, that can be modified for <$1000 for 200-225 HP, and you can work on yourself, I say go for it. I would only hesitate if you were going to use it as a daily driver like I do. I love doing it, but it takes weekly maintanence on my daily driver.
