sounds like the commone 'not enough current to do the Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: burglar alarm start interlock, bdb4, Sun, 18 May 2008 15:58:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
solenoid action' problem. had this a couple of times in the last year. apparently some rebuilt starters had a current rating printed on them specifying the amount of amps needed to activate them. the starter switch itself is struggling with this amount, so you can test for pos supply at signal wire on solenoid, but it doesn't have enough to always activate solenoid.
you have potentially 3 situations going on;
i) switch is failing. put test light/dvm on starter signal wire (small grey wire, spade connection on starter), and activate starter through ign switch. do this a dozen times to check it 100%.
2) starter is failing. i had the same problem, starter got intermittant, i bypassed the starter signal wire with a relay, to give it more current, starter worked great for about 30 starts, then failed completely! it was obviously on it's way out.
3) you have a fussy starter that needs a bit more juice. make up a relay bypass circuit.
very simple-standard single pole relay, with a ground wire and the signal wire activating the coil. direct positive feed from bat pos wire (at starter) will connect with the signal spade on the starter solenoid (as a replacement for grey wire) when activated. this will give you current superior to ign switch, but remember you may be looking at situation #2! so don't spend too much time and money hooking this up!
good luck
