AU,
Before you do anything else, like Siegfried says, do a compression test. If your car is really running poorly because it needs rings (or pistons and rings) you'll see unambiguous low readings with a dry test that will come up significantly when you do a wet test. That could be on one or more cylinders by the way. Installing rings and/or pistons isn't something that I would call a weekend job unless you have a full blown machine shop at your disposal. If it needs over-sized pistons the cylinders must be bored and honed to fit of course. If you're lucky and the bores and pistons are nice (and they often are on C900s) you can just break the glaze in the bores and re-install the pistons with new rings BUT any sensible mechanic will check the wrist pin bushing wear, main bearings, rod bearings and thrust bearings when an engine is this far apart. This is not a job you want to rush, a small mistake can waste all of your work and money. If you find that you have really low compression due to the rings/pistons and you want to minimize the labor you should take a hard look at that used engine. That's a pretty good price if it really has low miles and is in good condition. Some guys spend close to that on a good cylinder head alone.
Just curious but how many miles are on the engine that's blowing oil? It takes kind of a lot to make one of these wear out that bad, what happened?
Good luck
