The best way to test is with a volt-ohm meter. Set the meter to read ohms (resistance), and measure across the bulb. If it reads an open circuit, it's dead. If it reads a couple of hundred ohms it's OK. Alternatively, you could put a battery across the leads. A little tricky when it's still soldered in. A good one to use would be a simple 9 volt battery. If the bulb glows at all, it's OK.
Although the website doesn't list them, I've gotten bulbs at Radio Shack. They sell a 12 volts 60 ma bulb with wire leads. A two-pack is about $2.00. The other place to check would be a hobby center or a toy store that sells either model train accessories or doll house accessories. Both use what are called 'grain of wheat' bulbs - very small bulbs with wire leads. All you're looking for is a 12 volt rating. The current rating will be how bright the bulb is - 50-80 ma is a decent brightness.
