Sounds kind of extreme.
I'm working on the issue of long-crank starts on an '89.
To test if part of the trouble is your fuel check valve you can set up a rig to trigger the fuel pump by a push button, then do that just ahead of cranking to start.
Remove the black trim strip ahead of passenger door - - 3 torx screws - - that holds the carpet up over the ECU. Among the individual wires running to the ECU plug will be one that Saab calls violet color, very small gauge. It runs up above to the fuel pump relay, just above the ECU, the one closest to the door post. But it's easier to tap it down near the ECU plug.
Go to your hardware or auto parts store and get a tap clip, crimps on the wire and lets you tap into it with another wire. My preference closes up and then becomes a mouth into which you can plug a 1/4" spade lug. Make up a jumper wire to ground with a push button in it, plug one end into that crimp-on tap and the other end to ground. Then when you push the button while the ignition is on, the fuel pump will run.
Run fuel pump a few seconds and then crank. If starting improves you can keep it rigged up and do that as a cheap fix.
I find the car starts quickly if I pop the clutch on a hill and do without the starter.
My problem is only 5, 6 or 7 cranks, not 20. I suspected the ignition relay but opened it up and its contacts look clean. Cleaned them some more but no noticeable improvement. I will install it without its cover and then watch the contacts while I get someone else to crank and start the car, see if it falls away from strong contact during the starter drain time.
Other advice I've had is, look out for corroded positive battery cables, clamps etc.
