They will do this when the tips of the teeth of the reverse main and idler gears become sufficiently worn. Making the idler engage "deeper" will often solve the problem. Some guys turn the reverse actuating arm around, since it is asymmetrical, and that deepens the engagement some. I always heat them with a torch and put about a 10 or 12 degree bend in them just below the pivot point. You can easily make this repair after removing the cover (the one with the dipstick) on the side of the transaxle. Just don't drop anything in there! Good luck
