Managing ABS pump overheating

Summer is here, and the traffic is horrible. Last week for the first time after about 40 minutes of stop-and-go driving I had the ABS and Break Fluid lights come on, and the brake pedal feel got really strange. I was almost home, so crept the rest of the way without any trouble. The next morning, everything's fine, lights come on and go right off, and I could pump the brakes 18-20 times before it came back on (as it's always been).
A search here turns up a few threads indicating that probably what happened is that the ABS pump overheated and shut off. So I've got to figure out how to prevent this from happening in the future. I hit traffic again a few days later and minimized foot-break usage using the hand-break where ever possible and had no trouble. So that's good, but I've still got some questions. ('92 C900 SC).
1. Under what conditions does pressure come out of the accumulator, i.e. make the pump run? Any time you touch the brakes? Only when you brake hard? Will just holding the car still empty the accumulator?
2. Am I going to wear out the handbreak cables or something? The handbreak is set every night, so they shouldn't stretch, but still, it wasn't exactly designed for constant usage.
Thanks in advance.
