There was a time there where I carried duplicate parts of everything that if failed would leave me stranded - all mostly electrical- 2nd distributor, hall sensor and igniter, all relays, and a large tool box necessary to do repairs and quick fixes on the road - eg R and R thermostat, plus perishable items like coolant and oil. I even carried CIS style injectors because they are known to snap as they get older, vacuum line and fuel pump, alternator regulator, belts.
All of this fit under the trunk lid along with the spare.
The idea was to not rely on a mechanic to purchase and install a part that I could do on the roadside in less than an hour
Now because of rising gas prices and in an effort to reduce weight and save money,
I carry just basic tools - screwdriver and socket etc and absolutely essential parts which would be hard to find by local mechanic - eg relays and ignition parts.
When I recently removed all this stuff it was decided that we would rely on our triple AAA (CAA) card instead which provides 150km of towing, always aware that I should try not be more than that distance from a city/town capable of repairing the car.
Life if full of tradeoffs.
