This happened to me a couple weeks ago. I felt the way to go was to get the whole mirror body (ebay for me)...I was a little worried about heat/defrost capability if I glued a new one on. I have also glued a side view mirror on using Dow 732 silicone. A quality all-weather silicone seems to be the consensus on what to use (do a search). Be very careful not to scratch the back of the mirror when removing the old adhesive. Ask me how I know that scratching the back shows up as scratchs on the viewing side of the mirror...daoooooooooh.
Oh, and there is a way to remove the mirror and the mirror backing together. You use a small screwdriver through a hole on the underside of the mirror body. Do a search for Mirror Wobble and access the fixit post by Jonathan Scupin...details how to remove the unit.
