My 85 turbo would have no power without premium fuel. The knock senser would cut bat the boost so much it was a dog. This was from when it was new and so I always ran premium, but my wife would sometimes put regular in and it was real noticable. My wifes 1992 TC also driven since new has never had the drivablilty problems the 85 had. It gives better power on regular than the 85 did, but it doesn not perform as well and gets about 1-2 mpg less with midrange over premium.
Where I live I can get premium for 10 cents more than regular. So the price difference is about 2% more for premium. Her car gets 28 mpg on premium and about 26 mpg on regular. So it costs more to go the same miles on regular. Now the story was different when gas was 90 cent for regular and $1.00 for premium, then it was about a wash, the ability to get up to speed on an entrance ramp was more important to my wife than the less expensive fuel.
