But if it's carrying water that can encourage rusting in cylinder bores. And, if you somehow were able to get your brakes glowing hot, the water mixed into the fluid could vaporize. So it's a good idea to change out the fluid on an old car. Doubt it's the problem here directly.
Colin's problem is probably a bad clutch master cylinder. Bleeding it could help but I doubt it. What's happening is likely that the seals aren't starting to grab until partly into the pedal stroke, SOMETIMES. On those times the clutch isn't getting fully released thus the hard shifting.
Either a new clutch master, or if you're a do-it-yourselfer put in a rebuild kit.
