I tend to change them at the same time the ball joints go (for my family around 120-135k) just because they've seen the same amount of up-and-down motion as the balls and they're smaller. Last week I had to (wuss out and pay someone else to) change the steering rack on my 900. Instead of having him try to get the existing TREs off, which I heard was a bit of a pain in 2003 (this is my winter car in super-saline country), I just bought a new set. The old ones were getting loose, but it was hardly noticeable. For $15 each, it's cheap insurance.
