Since it's getting hot here in DC, I decided to convert to an 82 C fan switch. The mod is easy once I found a socket to fit the switch. It's a weird size - 29mm. It needs a deep socket to clear the electrical fittings. I couldn't find one at the local auto shops so I ended up getting a 1 3/16 inch deep socket (which was close enough) from Sears. Actually, I had to buy a kit and a new 1/2 drive wrench to do it, cost me $70 for new tools for an $8 part!! Oh well. The radiator tank is plastic on my replacement radiator so not much torque is required to get the switch on/off.
The switch definitely lowered the temp at which the fan goes on so I recommend this mod although the drop isn't. The fan now starts at about 2/3 on the gauge and drops to 1/2. With the old switch, it would start at 3/4 and stop at 2/3. With this slight decrease, the fan won't run excessively but the whole system will run cooler IMHO.
