1. Replace all bearings. Period. They're generally corroded if not worn.
2. Replace rings. Get the stock rings, not aftermarket. Clean the piston ring lands. You can use a piston ring land cleaner tool or just break on of the old piston rings and grind it to a chisel edge and use it as a scraper.
3. Replace the cam chain tensioner wear block. I'd replace the chain too. It will amaze you how quiet the engine will become.
4. Look at the cylinder walls..chances are the OEM crosshatch is still there. These blocks are TOUGH.
5. Chances are your oil burning is the turbo. I wouldn't bother with a valve and valve seal job although if you plan to hotrod the engine, a ported/reworked head is one of the best value mods you can do other than simply pumping up the boost pressure. If your engine is smoking after idling for more than a few minutes, it's generally the turbo. Replace or rebuild it...get a bigger/more efficient turbo if you want more horsepower at a higher boost...the stock one will overheat the charge air and the 87 has a sucky stock intercooler.
don't forget to use a ridge reamer to get off the lip on the cylinder wall before you pop the pistons out.
