it's usually a fun thing! I look at the end of the AIC valve and around the hose that comes from the bottom of it. you should see the "bombsite" looking straight down. If you are lucky the flywheel has a white mark on it. If you have a timing light that you can set the degrees advance/retard you set it and then the TDC mark will be what you are looking for. If you *don't* have that light you have to be able to see the scale on the flywheel, usually somewhat difficult unless it has been cleand up and possibly marked at the 15 or 16 degree mark. If it has not been done suggest you take the time to remove the crap in the way and do it, you can use an acid paint brush with the brissels cut short with a paste make of ajax and water to shine the area up, very easy and you can spray some water on it to clean off, the length of the brush handle makes it easier to get it to do the deed. then after it's dry do a white dot of paint on the TDC or degrees needed depending upon your timing light.
Lastly, the emissions you are getting will, most likely, be solved by getting a new CAT. The cats on the c900 are "tri metal" and a proper functioning CAT will help, NOx, CO, and HC. Been there and had a great tech that helped me understand it.
