I have been around the car since new - my way-back-then girlfriend bought it and I bought it from her in 1990. I have done most maintenance and generally flushed the engine every 3 years and replaced it with fresh Prestone plus a bottle of their anti-rust. This is not what I'd use now but it was what you could buy everywhere in those days. This has been the longest period without a flush (6 years) but I had the head gasket done two years ago so they replaced coolant at that time. The coolant came out very clean-looking, no sediment, nothing floating in it at all. I am leaning towards simply replacing the radiator..... I did find a loose vacuum hose so the starting problems are now long gone. I was replacing the thermostat and the thermosender with the low temp varieties but used a gutted thermostat for now as I want to eliminate it as a variable (i.e., a possible culprit of the heating). It is running tap water now so the current temps will drop somewhat when real antifreeze is added, and I will do this when I find and fix the heating problem. Oh yes, I ALWAYS use distilled water otherwise.... wow its hard to even find that stuff nowdays!
