Most of my Saab 5-speeds will clunk sometimes so I don't think it's pathological. I have a shift method that is now automatic. If the shift to reverse grinds or is balky I go back to neutral and let the clutch out and countoff 2 or 3 seconds then repeat the attempt to shift. It almost never grinds that way. If you have persistant grinding it's my opinion that the disc is not freely sliding on the splined shaft. I have fixed several grinders by removing the clutch and lightly greasing the splines.
