I'm shooting in the dark here. Are the idle problems present when you start the engine when it's cold? Do they continue once the engine has warmed? Does anything change once the engine has warmed?

I've read the majority of poor-running CIS setups can be traced to the fuel system.

The '79 used pretty much the same setup as the 99 turbo, B-engine with CIS injection. You might find some more info on your system on that board.

To speed the hunt, some obvious things like new filters (fuel and air), plus plugs/cap/rotor and maybe wires if they're old.

Your Hall sensor may be failing, or the ignition module might be failing.

These items will give you a somewhat clear slate on the spark side. Have someone crank the engine over with a plug removed but positioned inside the plug boot, ground it somewhere on the engine and watch for a spark. If you can see a decent spark, this area might be clear.

There might be a fuel delivery problem, you can start with some clear data by installing a pressure gauge to see how much your fuel pump is putting out. You'd have to get the spec numbers from a manual, I don't remember them. There could be a problem with your fuel pump, your warmup regulator.
Might want to check the condition of your injectors. Extract the injectors carefully and drop each set of two in a can or jar to catch the fuel spray. Then remove your bellows, jumper the fuel pump relay and carefully pull the airflow plate up to see how the injectors are spraying. There shouldn't be any dripping.

It's a lot to look through, but you've either got a spark or fuel problem. I'd suspect fuel first.

Good luck.
