I had to go through and clean off all of my corroded main connections after my '88 quit charging on me in April. It had nothing to do with anything I was doing, it was just twenty years' accumulated corrosion finally starting to resist so much that the alternator couldn't charge.
Clean up the main positive terminal on the passenger's side inner fender ahead of the cabin air intake with the batter disconnected (!!!) of course. After that, reterminate and clean the alternator grounds. When all is well, check your battery's operating voltage. When the car's overall operating voltage drops low enough, high-current consumers like the radio start to cut out first. Next, load test the car by checking the battery voltage with a whole bunch of electronics (defroster, cooling fan, wipers, radio, high beams, brake lights) stessing the battery and alternator. If the alternator can't keep up, you have more investigation to do.
