42,000 miles is dangerously approaching the 50k death knell for '93 Turbo 'verts, your charging failure is but the first symptom. To spare you the heartache of an inevitably long and painful witness to its demise, I would be willing to remove that rotting (soon to be) corpse of a Saab from your driveway, please provide a set of keys and an address.
Seriously, though-- It sounds on first read like you have a bad voltage regulator or a bad battery. The VR is easily replaced without messing with the alternator and it's a cheap part(~$30). The battery could be tested at your local parts store... If it's more than 5 years old you've gotten your money's worth, so lay out the $40-$50 or so to get a new one, and if charging problems persist then you can work upstream.
