Unless you are getting actual grinding in 1st or 2nd it probably isn't the synchros. Sounds to me like you are just having problems pushing it into 1st gear.
I had this difficulty on one of my cars and like yours it seemed to get worse as the car warmed up- it usually shifted better when cold. Like you, I used the "slide into second and then into first routine". I tried bleeding the clutch and changing the gear oil all to no avail. This went on for ~2.5 years until the pilot bearing (on the fly wheel) started to make a horrible squealing sound and the car didn't want to go into any gears at all. Once i got the clutch out of the car i found that the pilot bearing was completely frozen (no movement at all between the inner race and outer casing). I replaced it and things improved dramatically.
I think what was happening was that the engine and flywheel (via the partially frozen pilot bearing) were spinning the splined clutch shaft even when the clutch was disengaged. In other words power was being transmitted to the transmission when it shouldn't have been.
