I have one that does about 80 ft-lb and it is fine for most stuff. I would not get one from Harbor Freight, though -- just don't trust their stuff be accurate (let alone not to break).
An impact that'll do 300 ft-lb is good for nearly any bolt on the car except maybe a stubborn crank pulley. I use a cordless 18V DeWalt that'll do 300 ft-lb and spins axle nuts like they're hand-snugged on (makes you chuckle the first time you try it); I have a smaller DeWalt (~130 ft-lb) that's lighter and gets more use. While the cordless stuff is a bit less handy than an air set-up, it's still plenty good, quieter (no compressor noise), and portable, which is nice for forays to the pull-a-part. If I were to buy just one, I'd get the bigger, 300 ft-lb.
