Not sure how the hinges would line up if you didn't have the struts over their pins first. As I kind of recall it, he held the back of the hatch up high while I pulled the front down and into alignment and started the bolts, with a socket on a nutdriver.
I think I attached the struts to the car, held the hatch high to attach the struts to the hatch, then he held hatch high while I started the bolts. Skip the plastic washers for the struts till hinge bolts are in, then take the struts off again to put the washers on.
I changed mine because it was dented, scratched, and worst of all, rusted through to the interior, at the lower lip of window opening, behind the gasket. I found a perfect hatch, same color, price $20. And the color was so good a match, you can't tell it was from another car.
