Not quite sure what you mean "I am simply dumping R134 soon into the system with mixed expectations".
I'll take a guess that you attempting to put R134 into an system designed for R12 and you have a question about the oil.
You'll have three problems, oil, seals, and fittings.
Oil, R134 is not compatable with the oil used in R12. Even after you drain the oil, the lines should be flushed. You should also change the filter/drier.
Seals, unless you change the seals, they will eventually become compromised by the R134. I did this on an older car, the system lasted about 6 months until the seals on the compressor failed.
Fittings, the older style R12 fittings do not fit the newer R134 snap on fittings. The system was designed this way.
My advise would be too find a shop and have this done. It takes a lot of specialized tools.
