Anyone ever seen wear like this before? Car started throwing the Charging light at low RPMs (went away at higher RPMs). It did this in the summer of 2006, too. Back then, I pulled the alternator, took it to Autozone to be tested - it was "bad". I removed the VR assembly, found the abnormal brush wear, trimmed the long sliver down, reassembled, took alt back to Autozone, tested "good", reinstalled in car, no more Charging light.
Fast forward to Summer 2008, and I'm back in the same situation, only this time I just pulled the VR (using the RayF long screwdriver method, thanks RayF!!), trimmed the sliver off that brush, and away we go.
Is this pointing to something misaligned in the alternator? I can live with trimming brushes every 2 years...
