Hi, if I understand you correctly, the gauge is jumping around and you are considering replacing the sender, perhaps checking the ground on the back of the cluster? A test you can do is to pull the yellow wire connector off the sender, and ground it. this should result in pegging the meter to full hot. So consider doing this with the car cold, just turn the key to run, then take the lefthand speaker out of the dash and then you can feel around behind the cluster and see if it causes the gauge to change while you are looking for the ground? If so then leaning towards the ground needing attention. If the meter does *not* peg to hot, then either the wire (yellow at the sender end) has a issue OR the gauge does. You can replace with a used gauge in the cluster. it's a bit of work but really it's just time and screws and bolts, then individual parts you see in the front can unbolt in the back and be replaced. what model and year is your car? they have changed from time to time. If you determine that the gauge is not right send me an email, I have several entire clusters...
