To Joe98, SJohnB, Buycksmith, et al, this is a follow-up to my post from 7/15 regarding rough idling and what appeared to be a vacuum leak. There's no vacuum leak, just the normal sound of the hose to the AIC. It's a coolant leak in the head gasket on cylinder #1. I missed it on the compression test first time around because the engine was not warm enough. The symtoms are that it idles rough upon starting, then smooths out after a few seconds. Once the engine is hot, it both idles and runs rough. I surmise that the coolant only gets into the cylinder when the engine is hot and the pressure increases. When I start up cold, there's water in the cylinder that gets burned off after a few seconds. Everything's OK for a while until it warms up and the water starts leaking into the cylinder again.
After doing all the typical tests of the fuel and ignition system, cleaning the AIC valve and AMM and replacing the rotor and cap, and the oxygen sensor because I had a weak battery that needed replacing and what-the-heck, there's no time like when the battery's out to get at the O2 gizmo and it's got 90K miles on it, etc, it seemed like things were much better. But then the roughness would return and it was always cylinder #1 that caused it. I figured that injector was flakey becaue I had alredy swapped the sparkplug and wire. Had I not noticed water dripping from the turbo today, I would still be replacing parts and trying to interpret those darn LH codes. I re-ran the compression test on a hot engine and was surpised to get over 300psi on #1. Then I noticed the water bubbling out around the connection at the base of the gauge. Hmm... When I tested #2, I got a gusher coming out of #1. This can't be good! Looks like I'll be pulling the head, and I need to to the clutch anyway so one thing leads to another again. And yes, I did notice that I was losing some coolant, and that's why I was a little suspicious before that it might be a head gasket but I never figured the symptoms of a head gasket problem would come and go like that or that it wouldn't be obvious with a compression test.
