I'd like to point out that other 900s' mileage results are going to be different, especially compared with an 8 valve automatic.
I've noticed almost no difference between top up and top down on my '92 S over the past three years.
Driving with the windows down won't hurt you that much as long as you only open them about one revolution of the crank. This works on my '88 because it keeps me cool but doesn't start the wind buffeting and screwing up your draft.
Both of my cars have the AC systems removed. In the '88 it was because it didn't work and was dead weight. On the '92 it was because it didn't work, was dead weight, and because it's a convertible. I realize some people reside south of the Mohawk River where summer temps get a little higher, but you should try swapping out the wiper linkage or a water pump or an alternator or the pollen filter or the radiator (...) now. I still believe that on the H engine, AC was an afterthought so it just gets in the way. This being the middle of summer, it has cleared 85 degrees for the past week and a half with high humidity, so we've got it.
