I have to agree a Saab vs a Cherokee. I love my Saabs but I hold on to my 88 Jeep Cherokee for its Select Track 4x4 for getting through the snow. If I slide off the road I've always been able to drive right back on. (best tools to carry are a cell phone and a shovel) Heck, if the road is icepacked I'll drive in the median to get to a safe place. The low Saab can get hung up on a few inches of shoulder/driveway snow pack. My Cherokee goes where my former Explorer wouldn't think about going. Plus has the capability to tow a trailer with a disabled Saab on it.
As far as fuel, the XJ's are boxes,
20mpg at 30mph in 4x4 (blizzard driving 400 miles)
18mpg at 60mph in 4x4
16mpg at 70mph in 2x4
14mpg at 70mph in mild headwind.
Having the tendency to ramble I'll 'opinionate'; Cherokee's are the Saabs of 4x4's, easily good for 200,000 miles. Except you want the Cherokee 4spd auto over the 5spd.
