'88 SPG - is it worth it? Posted by sjohniom [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hello.
I was very close to buying my first Saab today, but after an inspection revealed repairs for a previously undisclosed accident I'm having second thoughts.
The car is a 1988 SPG with 104K miles. The interior is quite nice except for hanging headliner - leather seats are in good shape, no cracks in dash. Engine and transmission in good shape (compression 185/185/180/190). There is some mild rust in the suspension/under body.
The hood and front right fender were replaced at some point, and the car has been repainted (fairly good job but as the mechanic noted in technical terms "more sparkly than stock".) I noticed some stumbling around 3-4000RPM on a test drive, but the mechanic found a bad plug cap that resolved the problem.
It's got the usual stuff in 20-year old car - one leaking "inner CV cup", A/C inoperative, leaky oil pump, leaking left rear caliper, etc. I was expecting to shell out a few grand immediately to freshen things up, but the accident repair has me second guessing.
The current owner (3rd) was asking $4200, and the mechanic is saying in current state no more than $2500. The owner turned down $2500 and didn't even bother to counter offer.
I really enjoyed driving the car, but having difficulty deciding if it is worth offering more money.
Any advice?
Thanks.
