end play is king, or villian!
If you are going to do replace the turbo, consider getting the next years version that has water cooling in it too. You need the turbo (direct bolt on) AND a new lower radiator hose (for an 88) to get the tributary split in the hose to supply water to the turbo, you need the solid fitting from the lower left of the radiator (from that new tributary), and the connection to the turbo, then you need the return to the intake on the intake manifold, there is a blank there and you take it out and put in the fitting.
Best bet is a pick and pull that you get to go and play. That way you can get the newest lowest mileage turbo AND all of the fittings too. If you want to do this shoot me an email and I'll send you pictures of the items I mentioned, I did this on my 1987 convertible.
The water cooling makes it almost impossible to hurt the turbo, assuming that you keep the oil and water at proper levels.
