compressor will fail if you use the wrong oil with the refrigerant.
OTOH, if you get all the old stuff out and convert back to R12, it seems like you ought to have exceptional AC because the R134 systems are designed to compensate for the shortcomings of R134.
I would consider replacing the receiver/dryer if you decide to convert back. It's not a bad idea to replace r/d every 10-15 years anyway, same with hoses.
Many years ago the EPA tried to mandate hose changes for AC systems every four years....it went nowhere notwithstanding the demonstrated leakage and probable failure of AC hoses. The manufacturers went nuts and successfully lobbied Congress and the EPA to withdraw the proposal.
