Hi everyone! After an 8 year stretch being "Saabless", I'm back in. First car is an 88 900s Red/camel. It's in pristine condition for having 215K on it. A friend gave it to me with the head off, and after that(only needed seals), I did the entire front end(except the rack)/bearings/brakes/almost all the hoses and rehooked up the prepump in the tank(car came with a bunch of parts including pump, but the electrical connector had just came off. The original owner, and the friend that gave it to me both used Synthetic oil, and machinest said there was basically no measurable wear on any of the valve train!...cylinders looked brand new, and could still see the original crosshatching with no real ridge at the top. I gave the car to girlfriend/her 15.5yo daughter so she could have a nice safe car/learn a stick. Rack has a little slop in it, but drives fine...but is weeping/starting to flow out of the seal where the steering shaft comes in. I've spent so far about $1000 on parts(I'm not rich),she has no spare money, so I was wondering if anyone knew if that seal might be doable in place just to buy some time? Other car is an 88 turbo grey/burgandy that I got for $200 with 205K and had a bad ECU/all rubber associated with the turbo.....now runs great, but tranny is toast(if I knew how to post a pic here, I'd post the pic of what I drained out of it).....anyway guy who gave me the red car also has a 5 speed he doesn't want as he's leaning away from 70-80's saabs, so just need the time/money to get that running......So the magic question is can the seal where the steering shaft comes in be done in place?...Sincerely Tom Laplante
