I am (well, my brother is) replacing a turbo in my 87. Existing one grinds on housing and the pull is not very strong - sounds awful too. I have spare turbo w/ mystery miles from parts car. How much play can there be in the "shaft" if this is the correct word? My understanding is very little, but that some is acceptable. Any expert advice to save me from either unnec. buying a new one or having to replace the replacement in a year? I am not going to mess w/ the upgrade to water-cooled (too much messing w/ hoses for someone who doesn't know what he's doing). I'd like to save the $500 on a rebuilt one but don't want a non-viable turbo.

Also, the 87 is an "SPG" My brother bought Ray V's $14 apc resistor kit which is said to replicate '93 comm. edit. power. Would you suggest using a base turbo w/ this kit or upgrading to a hybrid? I actually like NOT having too much power and enjoy the feel of my other car (8-valve) w/ low torque. I would like to gain true SPG power w/out going overboard. Thank you in advance!
