Arabiflora,
I haven't bought a new T37 filter in a long time but they always used to have the grommet installed OK and it seems to me that the grommet was symmetrical anyway. I used to get my filters from Saab because I was worried about aftermarket quality on that item. It seems logical that while making a turn the ATF is sloshed to one side and if the filter was not secured to the pick-up tube you might breifly starve the pump but I've never seen that problem myself (sure happens in gas tanks though). It wouldn't be difficult to completely displace the grommet by being careless during installation. Before dropping the pan and checking the filter grommet I'd suggest that you double check the fluid level while fully warmed up and idling in neutral. Several things can make the transmission slip upon take off (mostly things that are impractical to fix until the unit is on a bench) but low fluid level is at the top of that list. Wear from high mileage is not far below, in this case worn front clutch components and/or leakage in the front clutch circuit due to various worn o'rings. Good luck
