The inexpensive MIG welder from HF is a good machine to buy to screw around until you get the technique down. The wire feeder on that machine is a POS and often won't feed the wire if you have the slitest curl in the line. If you do go the MIG weld route, drill 3/16" holes in the patch plate around the perimeter about 1/2" from the edge and about 1" apart. be sure your patch plate overlaps good metal at these points. also be sure you have clean bare metal at the weld points. You can prime it with weld-through primer though. Then with the welder, fill in the holes by making contact with the floor pan through the hole in the patch panel and letting the weld puddle in. You'll need the lowest setting in order not to burn through the floor pan. This technique is called plug welding and is similar in strength to the spot welds used to put the car together at the factory. Using plug welds is superior to trying to weld the whole perimiter seam/edge. Afterwards, paint the bare areas, apply a good seam sealer and then undercoating from beneath. Be aware that welding s not something that the average DIYer is good at right out of the gate. It takes practice. A floorpan replacement is probably a good place to start, as it will be concealed afterwards. If you do get the HF welder, get a good set of welder's gloves and a self-darkening flip-down mask as well.
