Is the AC cutoff switch necessary?

The switch that sits clamped in hoses between the upper radiator and the engine, do I need it?

I ask because my T-fitting is kinda cruddy, I cleaned it up this weekend and in the process noticed that a lot of corrosion and decay had produced some small holes around the outer ends of the T-fitting. The holes are under the hose ends when installed but I'm having a hard time getting the clamp tight enough to stop leaking.

This part new costs more than $100 from the dealer (I was a little surprised by that quote).

I'm considering bypassing this switch and just slipping in a new straight pipe with no means for the sensor switch.

This switch is supposed to kill the AC if it senses the coolant temps that are too high, is this correct? It's a safety feature?

I'm pretty careful with the AC, only use it on highway driving, watching the temp guage and I'm the only one driving this car.

Can I get away with this?
