Baab,
It just does not make sense. It seams you go back and forth. The best thing to do is place in a 16valve Turbo. Remove the B engine and leave it as a spare for your 99.
The problem with just adding a Turbo is:
1. you need to place in a oil cooler.
2. What of the fuel management? B Turbos came with a different fuel distributor than what you have on your GLE.
3. What about the valves?
4. The clutch..
5. the ignition is different as well.
6. Pistons and connecting rods are different for Turbos for reliabilty.
7. What about the oil feed/ return lines that come out ofthe block?
8. How much will the Turbo cost, and the plumbing?
9. What about the radiator/cooling?
What is the sense of placing in a Trubo..zipping around with worry that when the Turbo kicks in lovingly, that damage/detonation may be occuring.
The 16valve Turbo is already proven, the factory's best engine in terms of longevity and performance.
Now, when you analyse this, it is cheaper to look for a doner with a bad tranny, or a rusted body. All the necessary parts are there, plus the better engine.
Lastly, when you remove the B engine out of the 900, all of the headaches of chains and tensioner/water pump can be minimised and reserved for the 99.
There is nothing wrong with upgrading the powerplant, and the advantage is that everything drops right in.
