If I were going to try the polysulfide caulk or other fillers to fill the crack, I'd also drill at the end of the crack to dead-head it. It might keep going but what the heck, less of a chance I'd figure.
What's happening is the black vinyl (?) skin has become brittle from UV and age oxidation and heat and is shrinking. The foam, attached to the skin, has to crack as the skin cracks.
That black skin started out life flexible and stretchy. I haven't tried but have considered, giving a dash a Vaseline facial or something similar, to try to rejuvenate the plastic with some oils that would replace the missing plasticizers. It would mean lots of napkins at edges to catch the melt-off, and probably the car would stink like Vaseline for a while afterwards, and the dash would be a little shinier for a while. I don't see how ArmorAll or other treatments do much.
