I have an 84 Turbo sedan and an 88 SPG, the former spent the last 5 years standing in my drive before being made roadworthy but no way was I going to get rid of it. The SPG is determined not to boost properly but I'm not giving up on that either; I'm having to learn about the workings of the car so that I can work on it myself instead of having to pay a mechanic. If I had the space and the money then yes, I'd have more of them before they're left to die or run into the ground by less obsessed owners.
What's the attraction? Who can say, but here's an interesting thing: the mechanic who worked on our cars acquired an SPG, and drove it for a couple of weeks while he was fixing it up for sale. He'd never worked on or driven a Saab before. Now, he's also thoroughly hooked and has two c900's of his own with plans to rebuild one from the ground up. And he, too, would have more of them if he also had the money and the space.
I also remember the days that Saab owners flashed their lights. Well, pre-GM ones anyway. Out here in Silicon Valley I've found very few other Saab drivers to flash at, but I'm fairly confident we still would, if we're both old enough to remember. Do any other marque drivers even consider this, I wonder? It's not just a rarity thing, it's a true sign of fellowship.
If street drugs are this addictive then I can understand why we have the social problems that we do. I await a Craigs list ad for a used Saab 900 headed "psst ... wanna score?"
