Today I pulled the v/c to do the gasket with loctite 518(red) and see about that leaky oring on the distributor.

Well I had the wrong type gasket- mine have the 1/2 moons separate from the gasket. so in for a dollar I cleaned up the old gasket (2-3 yrs old)and polished up the channel for the gasket, then looked over the distributor axle. I loosened the one bolt on the "Y" yoke and the entire axles and dist slide out forward with little effort. I could see the o ring and used a dental pic to try pull it off/out. the o ring was totally hard and cracked in place on the axle trying to inch it off. the new one was I lubed with oil and slid it into place. then I lined up the 2 nubbs on the axle shaftto the receiver side in the block area and gently tapped the distributor back into place. The new o ring was slightly fatter and it took more effort to tap it back into place. It should leak any further. Tightened the "y" yoke bolt just to get a little bite on the housing.

Now the gasket. I put 518 in the the v/c channel(s) and a bead around the contact area on the block. worked in the bolts softly all around then around again til it was just "snugging" up with my hand lightly centered on the shaft of the socket set. I don't think I over tightened anything as I think the v/c bolts take only about ?22? lbs torque.

So I now see hear a slight rattle in acellerating ONLY between 1-2 gears and can see slight smoke exhuastng from where the exhaust manifold mates to the down pipe connect - like if the gasket there is cracked.

Question: could my shift rattle/diesely noise be the engine exhaust noise from the exhaust pipe "gasket" crack or might something insde the v/c area be amiss??? I rev the engine throttle and listen but don't hear it - its only when I accellerate in gear- this didn't happen before I did todays v/c gasket or dist o ring. I know what a tapping cam sounds like ( the lub straws to each cam) but this is different sound. Am pretty sure I didn't upset one of the lub straws.

Thanks for your comments
