I was wondering about it all night. I thought that the wisdom of the mfr would have tried to make it failsafe and Keyed" the type of fingerjoint so that one side is (say)fatter than the other or,from what you appear to indicate, the orientation of the "fingers" and notches on the shaft are not 180degrees opposes but perhaps 0 - 170 ???? so it can only go together if properly oriented. it was a subtle engineering design as I hardly noticed the variation but recall having rotated the distr shaft to see if the parts came together easier.
And yes I agree, the plug wires are a totally different game .
thanks for making me feel better about it.
