finally replaced the o ring when I pulled the v/c cover to replace that leaker too. The distributor assembly was "too" easy to jiggle out after removing the "y" yoke bolt on the forward part of the engine. the original o ring was tight to the shaft, shrunk and brittle (22yrs!). lubed and pushed on new o ring and had to use comparatively more effort to tap in the distri assembly with the new o ring. Shouldn't leak now!!! I can't imagine trying to replace the distributor w/o having the v/c removed. the alignment of the shaft end prongs to the receiver side is touch and go even when I am staring down on it. would be alot more time consuming to try to feel it into place with v/c on. Note and mark the orientation of the rotor notch to ensure it goes in easier.
